PROTECT A LIFELINE FOR ARTISTS

In 1875, a group of art students had the radical idea to create an art school designed for and run by independent artists—and it changed American art forever. Today, the League continues to fulfill and expand the mission set forth in our constitution by:

  • Operating 100+ affordable, accessible classes & workshops each semester
  • Subsidizing 60% or more of every student’s true tuition costs
  • Awarding $1.2 million in need and merit-based scholarships each year
  • Providing fine art education for more than 3,500 young New Yorkers across all five boroughs—for free

YOUR CONTRIBUTION WILL HELP

  • Safeguard a New York cultural institution that serves 6,000 students, 200 instructors, and 70,000 visitors annually
  • Modernize a landmark building for safety, sustainability, and accessibility
  • Keep world-class art education within reach for all
  • Build career pathways that help artists stay, work, and contribute to New York’s creative economy

Campaign Pillars

PRESERVE A HISTORIC LANDMARK

To preserve the League for the next century, the following essential upgrades must be addressed:

  • Restore historic façades
  • Replace aging roof systems
  • Modernize HVAC and energy infrastructure
  • Restore skylights that are vital to studio practice

EXPAND YOUTH ACCESS

To keep the League accessible to artists of all backgrounds, expanded scholarships and youth education funding are essential. Goals include:

  • Expanding need-based scholarships so that serious artists can study regardless of financial means
  • Growing Seeds of the League to introduce more young people throughout New York City to rigorous studio training
  • Supporting teaching artists and instructors who mentor emerging talents
  • Providing early pathways for promising students to develop their artistic voice

EMPOWER ARTISTS’ CAREERS

To ensure League artists thrive professionally, we must offer meaningful career development opportunities to current students and alumni. Goals include:

  • Creating mentorships, apprenticeships, and professional training opportunities
  • Supporting exhibitions and public art projects
  • Creating pathways connecting League artists to galleries, collectors, and institutions
  • Equipping artists with the skills, mentorship, and networks needed to sustain creative careers

KEEP ART EDUCATION AFFORDABLE

New York’s cultural vitality depends on artists. Yet rising costs are making it increasingly difficult for artists to train and remain in the city. The League provides a proven and scalable solution:

  • Open admissions: no prior experience required
  • Flexible enrollment: month-to-month, year-round
  • Atelier-style instruction by practicing artists
  • Affordable access to professional-level training
  • Free arts education for young people across New York City

"The League keeps the door to artistic fulfillment open—when too many doors are closing."
